One season down

Written by Gewoon Rechtdoor at 11:35 8/2-2021

The first day of Season 56 is a good time to reflect on our time in the OCM universe so far, which has been more or less all of last season. Here we go!

First and foremost, Niek Buchinx scored more than half the points of our team total, with wins in div 11, 9 and 8 but suprisingly also 3 podiums in division 6 as the highlights of his season. For much of his success he has his sprinting train to thank, with Ingemar and Osvaldo as the most experienced and loyal lead outs. Cedomir and Henry also deserve an honourable mention for their efforts to keep the train on track during the hectic last kilometers heading up to the final.

Gerben Fens has been the last lead out for Niek up untill about two thirds into the season. Then tests proved he was a special kid (22yo), and to this day he has not yet reached his full potential. His first race as our captain resulted in a completely unexpected division 5 win. He then had to compete in the first ever classic for Gewoon Rechtdoor, where he was able to score a 7th place. So far he has always landed in the money when riding as a captain, and we hope to keep this up troughout his career ;)

At the end of the season we managed to add two TT'ers to the team, bringing the number of time trial 'specialists' to 4. We will try to get them a FR-captain to ride for.

Then last but not least on the riders' end, we have extravagant Spaniard Estevan Mayo. We signed him on our first day in OCM, and he has proved to be a great talent on the training track. Estevan knows he is extremely talented, but he can not make up his mind yet about what type of rider he wants to be: simply a hilly sprinter, or a unicorn who can both climb a mountain and win a mass sprint. Tough choice for such a young guy...

Manager Twan would also like to take this moment to thank both the managers of Nikoline and Navarone Cycling Team, who have been of great help shaping the team - and especially the ideas and direction of the team - so far. I think it is incredible that they still answer my messages despite my stubborness and endless stream of follow-up questions. Thanks!

All in all we finished the season with 552 points, on a 243rd place in division 4. 283 points came from Niek, 90 from Gerben, and 58 from Henry. The remaining 121 points were mostly scored in division 10 and 11 by guys who are pursuing other careers now.

Looking forward, we will soon start losing points for the first time in our history, which will drop us to division 6. We have no intention on dropping further on purpose, and actually hope to be back in the 5th soon, as we always want to perform on the highest stage possible. We hope to add another captain, focused on FR, to the team around day 30, who will have to carry the burden of scoring points together with Gerben. Stay tuned!
